I just found this excellent tip on how to turn off the infernal windows desktop search. If you’re like me you’ve had to turn off the indexer; either because it was hogging disk IO or because your development environment was crashing during a compile then you’ll appreciate this. Even if you do choose to have the indexer running it’s annoying that it is unable to return results on files that have very recently changed. For all of these reasons I much prefer the old MS Search Companion (though neutered from having the dog). Here’s how to do it:
Go to this reg key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Desktop Search\DS
Modify ‘ShowStartSearchBand’ and set the value to ‘0’
Close and open your eplorer windows and voila, no more indexed search.
